Inception Meme by ihni Inception Meme by ihni
Original is here: [link] by :iconradioactivemongoose:

Okay, I've been living in this fandom for weeks now, and it's starting to drive me just a little bit insane.

Inception. Movie. Go see it, if you haven't seen it already. I'm SURE you'll figure out an ending/interpretation that fits your current mood. Me, I'm alternating between three interpretations, and there are two more that might work as well ... I'll have to try them out next time I'm watching the movie.

Because yeah, I'll watch it again. And then again. And again.

I can't WAIT 'til the DVD.

Anyway. In about two weeks, I've seen the movie twice and read hundreds of fanfics and theories. Movie ... vs fanfics. Canon ... vs fandom. Yeah, I'm a little confused about what's "real" or not, now. WHICH IS ONLY FITTING!

I'm going on vacation now. No internet for a couple of days. I think that's a good thing.

Ehm. Bye.

Very funny and amusing meme.

I do believe I can answer some of those questions for you. If you 'die' in limbo you merely wake up. As with Cobb and Mal, Aiadne and Fiscer, and then Cobb and Saito. The shock of practically dying, or almost dying, woke them up.

He said that the spent years building limbo together. That means that it was both of their ideas going into building. Also, it was said in the movie that Limbo is the final destination. Where one goes when they have gone to far into the dream realm. And since it was technically surrounded by water, and I have read where someone described it as akin to an Iceberg. I believe Limbo is infinite. What Cobb had was merely an island, and since both he and Mal had gone into the same dream, they both shared the same island. So there could quite possibly be thousands of others who have died in their sleep and gone to Limbo. They are all just on separate islands, divided by a vast expanse of water.

Another point that reaffirms that is that Cobb washed up once again on a beach, but the lay out was different. His dream world with Mal crumbled during the storm, so he must have 'drifted' to Saito's version of Limbo, the infinite nothing. Which was more oriental based in appearance.

Why there are no projections is truly a good question and one that I cannot conceive an answer for.

Hope you found these slightly helpful in your quest for answers.

Thank you for your answers, but as with a lot that has to do with Inception, the answers give birth to even more questions, like; if you merely wake up if you 'die' in limbo, then why was everyone so terrified of ending up in limbo? Like "oh no, if we die on this level we'll end up in LIMBO!" ... like it was the end of the world. Limbo seemed like a pretty neat place to me - you could create ANYTHING there - especially if you just wake up again if you 'die' there.

And so, if they dreamed up a boat in limbo, could they go visit other islands? And was it possible to dream up PEOPLE in Limbo? If they could dream up everything else, people should have been a piece of cake, right? But then, how would they know that it was "real" people they met when they went to those other islands, in stead of people they just dreamed up?

... I wonder if Limbo is like Earth, like, a round planet?

Now you've made me wonder about more things about this movie! XD But it's what I love about it - there doesn't seem to be any definitive (spelling?) answers. There are only interpretations, and I very much enjoy hearing people's interpretations. So thank you for taking the time to give me your point of view. :)

Because once in Limbo it becomes increasingly difficult to tell the difference from reality. Except in reality, jump off a building and you die. Permanently. So Limbo was pretty much the 'Ultimate Confusing Mystery.' People are generally afraid of the unknown. Cobb was really the only one in the group who had ever been to Limbo, where as it was a mystery to everyone else and it is not like they could ask someone. Seeing as how Cobb was practically one of the very few to ever escape and he was touchy on the subject.

People are complicated with all their minute details, their flaws, strengths, weaknesses, personalities. Despite Limbo being describe as infinite there probably were some rules and limitations. Though not many.

Now that would be interesting indeed.

Having questions to wonder and answer is just another great feature about the movie. Right down to the 'end' it keeps you guessing and I doubt anyone will ever find all the answers.

You are welcome, I liked many of your opinion's as well. They really helped me to see somethings from a different angle.

[link] A drabble for each of these words. I started it today and I'm nearly done with number 3. I'm ending up with half a ton of Eames and Arthur fluff. Not slash, just cute stuff <3 And I'm going to have some arguing between them too. Like in Blindfold I made it so it was dark and Eames shot Arthur int he leg, thinking he was a projection and trying to kill him, and Arthur had been pissed off with everyone ever since since they treated it like nothing had happened even though he had to go through the rest of the mission in a lot of pain xD

haha, oh god, i don't even remember... i think we mighta still been divided by the end of the discussion, lol.

i can see how it would make sense for the architect to plan out the outfits based on the setting... although then again i guess if it was up to the dreamer they'd be creating it at the same time as they'd be processing the setting and djkfhdkgshtls

i think ultimately our discussion came down to like, a personal style thing... like we tried to pin down who we thought it was based on the style of clothes and such. and now that i think about it i think we might've decided it was the dreamer? fffffff i dunno, lol

I just got back from watching it. I had your meme saved in my bookmarks to check out after I'd seen the film with a bunch of other inception things, and.... gosh. Where do I even start to figure this out? I'm going to watch it again, even if the cinema is so freaking expensive. I can't wait until this is out on dvd to watch it again. I love it, but I hate it for making my mind explode so much and making me want to stay up for days and days fantasising. I SO want to go down a dream level or two and fly around for a day in zero gravity! But I'd have to have friends to help kick me out. AAAAAAH, INCEPTION IS GOING TO TAKE OVER MY LIFE! I love it.

Aww, this is great (*still grinning from seeing Arthur all dressed up*)!

And very good questions, btw - for which I don't have any answers (I haven't read anything about it, but maybe I should start right after posting this :D). I think Cobb can't just move abroad with his kids, 'cause the police would followed them, leading them directly to Cobb...

Hey, did you ever try to detect if you're in a dream while dreaming? I only managed once, and that was years ago during a nightmare... I was chased by a witch on a cuckoo clock (yeah, my dreams are pretty random as well :D).

And also, pfft! If they can create false identities for themselves on jobs, they sure as hell can create false identities for a couple of kids! Take them to a nice country that doesn't work so well with the American police, find a nice place to live (they've GOT the money), and settle down! The kids will be too small to suffer from it, and they'll all make a nice life for themselves! Problem solved! No need to drag the team into mortal (or mental) danger.

Yeah, but assumed the whole movie is just another dream, running away with the kids wouldn't work, 'cause they'd be found, wherever they'd go.
And I think Cobb is too nice and caring to just tear them away from their grandma and their home. They don't seem that young anymore not to understand what would be going on, and going on a "life long vacation" and having to respond to different names is pretty hard for those kids (I know, I asked them :D).
Oh well, maybe Nolan will share his point of view on the dvd's specials :-).

I have NEVER, as I remember (and I write them all down ... two and a half notebooks filled with dreams now!), managed to detect that I'm in a dream while I'm experiencing it. If I am aware of that it's a dream, I am aware of it from the start, although that's rare.

When I'm dreaming, I just go with the flow and accept everything the dream throws at me. "Gigant ants living under my house? Sure. And they eat only cheese, you say? Why, obviously!"

Two and a half... I'm about to end my first. But I never write all my dreams down, this would take up hours. Plus I sometimes find it really hard to write down what I experienced - even if it's just me reading them, I don't know. While dreaming I sometimes have the feeling that I'm blind but still am able to see everything, it's kinda weird...

I do go with the flow, it was just this one time when I said to myself (while actually hanging onto a hand of that cuckoo watch I was telling you about) "Please wake up, this is just a dream, wake the f*** up", all the while seeing this witch coming closer. Maybe I woke up because I was killed, don't really remember, but I had the feeling it was because I realized I was dreaming. Anyway, talking about weird dreams; I was Al Pacino, once :D.

Al Pacino, huh? Wow. I've never been Al. But damn you, now I got all inspired to read through my old dream books! Have you seen Pan's Labyrinth? Listen to this:

"29/3 2007: I dreamt that me and some friends were on some kind of roadtrip, and in the end one of them (a monster, the one with the eyes in his hands in Pan's Labyrinth - from the beginning) became a dangerous monster, because he ate some kind of hamburger. And when we were at some public restroom several floors underground, with seethrough walls, he turned into some gelly-like substance, and his head (and hands and feet) were shaped like spoons. And he was working with some government people in a car and chased us, because they had to find us. Then I found a 5 SEK coin from 1966."

... now, why didn't they dream like THAT in the movie? I'd have paid extra to see that.

Ah well. Maybe the DVD extras, huh?

Let me hear some of your dreams!

I only realized that I was Al when I had to show my ID in order to keep my sister out of trouble - I didn't feel like Al (or as a man, for that matter) at all.

No, I haven't seen Pan's Labyrinth, yet, but I have the dvd :D. Was that dream you wrote me about a nightmare, or just a 'nothingseemsstrangetomeanymore' dream? Haha, having spoon-shaped limbs makes sense when you're working with the government =p.

Ok, here I go:
1st of Feb. 2010: I dreamt that me and my family just moved into a new house, in which I've already been in previous dreams (or so I thought) but still didn't know my way around (the house had many angles and the floors were shifted and it had a lot of very confusing stairs... kinda like Hogwarts). Anyway, I noticed that I had stubble in my face, so I began shaving (as I was doing so, I wondered why I never grew a beard and who used to shave me up to then because I couldn't remember ever doing it myself...). Because of my blurry vision I went outside and all the while I carried the head of a kitten in my hand (it was alife and it didn't seem odd to me at all... I even showed it the scenery, 'cause, you know, it couldn't look around on it's own, with no neck and all). When I came to a fence I put down the head (I put it in the shade, how thoughtful of me!) and noticed 3 kids coming out of the woods, carrying bags. They asked me if these belonged to the townfolk (on one of the bag was written "townfolk"), so I took a look inside; it contained tennis rackets. I told them to show me where they found the bags and so we all went into the forest. There I saw a wooden coffin and guess who was inside? DRACULA! And he began to sing with this beautiful voice. I didn't know the song, but after I awoke I still remembered it and sang it the whole day long. Unfortunately I don't remember it anymore...

When I was really young (up to the the age of about 9 years), I frequently had terrible nightmares, some of them every night (this one dream was always exactly the same, while another one had the same core story but took place in different locations). I didn't write them down, but I still remember them pretty well and I don't think that I'll ever forget them.
But I don't believe in interpretations of dreams, do you?
Reply
:iconihni:
ihni Featured By Owner Aug 29, 2010
Yeah, see THAT is a normal dream! Where ... Stuff. Just. Happens. =p It WAS very thoughtful of you to put the kitten head in the shade. You must be a very thoughtful person. Heh. Seriously, they should have gone into someone's dream in the movie, where they dreamt like that. It would have been fun to see what they could have made out of it.

I rarely have nightmares (although a few months ago I woke up and thought I saw a gigantic spider in the roof ... but I was too tired to panic, so I crushed it with my pillow. When I woke up, there was no dead spider around, so it must have been a dream ...), and the only time I can remember waking up crying was when I dreamt that my parents got back together without telling me. Yeah, very traumatic, that ... =p

I don't believe in dream interpretation, no ... unless you're trying to figure out something from your own dreams. But someone else's dreams? No way. Although people could have a field day with the dreams we dream, though, right?

I forgot to mention that in the end of the dream (after dracula singing) I saw the kitten again. It had grown itself a body (:wtf:!) and was tottering away... So yeah, I'm very thoughtful, I gave that kitty it's body back =p.

Your spider dream just reminded me of something. I once awoke because of the house alarm (meaning, somebody breaked into our house, or it was a false alarm....). Normally after the alarm is turned off, somebody from the security firm calles to make sure everything's ok, so I waited and waited but there was no call. I got really nervous and went to my dad, who was just preparing to go to work, and asked him about the alarm. He had been awake much longer than I had, and he hadn't heard anything. So I figured I must have dreamt it... but it sounded so real and I could still hear it after I had awoken...

I don't even believe in dream interpretation for your own dreams. I can mostly tell where I got the stuff from that I dream about at night. Once I was looking through a newspaper and saw an ad for the new "The incredible Hulk" movie. That night I dreamt that Gollum turned into Hulk and chased me... Yeah :paranoid:. So have you ever tried to interpret your dreams, with a book or something?

Nah. Sometimes I dream things that I haven't thought about/known that I knew for years. Interpreting them is just ... mostly a waste of my time. It's like interpreting movies; it can be FUN, but it's not necessary, and it doesn't change anything. When it comes to dreams, I just go with the flow. :p

Uh, let's see if I can help:

(This is what I've come to believe)

1) The others in the dream can change things about themselves (like, weapons) but not about the dreamscape (like, buildings). Only the Architect can change the layout of the dream.

2) I think the architect probably decides what they wear, so it's dreamscpe-appropriate. Like, in Arthur's dream, everyone wears suits because it's an office. Fischer doesn't see them until later.

3) I don't honestly know what would happen if you PASIVd in Limbo...I don't think you could.

4) No. Projections only attack if someone else is changing your dream because they recognize the builder's foreign nature. It's your mind, so they won't attack you.

5) Supposedly because Limbo is your subconscious.

6) I'd say, if you weren't sedated, you'd wake up in reality again, supposing that your body was still asleep (like Cobb and mal, who were only hooked up to the PASIV but not sedated.) If you WERE sedated, I think you'd just wash back up on shore in Limbo and start all over again.

7) Limbo is different for everyone. However, if you're hooked up to the PASIV together, you go to the same Limbo because your subconsciouses are linked by the device, so you spend enternity with each other. However, if you and some other guy are hooked up to two DIFFERENT PASIVs, you would go to separate Limbos.

8) Yes, Cobb and Mal were there together.

I hope that helps! I really liked your meme. XD

... damn, hit the "send"-button too early ...

7. I buy that limbo is different for everyone. And I accept the idea that if you're linked by the same device, you're in the same limbo (probably the dreamer's, right?). But what happens if you go into limbo, and then someone removes the PASIV device from both of you? Still in limbo then? :S

8. Okay. No arguments there, after thinking it through a bit.

It DID help me, thank you very much, I do apprechiate other peoples POV on these things. I just love discussing it and twisting it around, and the best part is that I'll probably be able to do that for a long time without finding "answers".

1. Okay, that makes sense ... but could the Architect like OVERRULE (put in a veto? :P ) those changes? Like, if Ariadne was feeling like it, could she like, put Eames in a skirt and give Arthur a banana in stead of a gun? And could they change their haircolour and stuff as well? Does that mean that everyone is a potential forger?

2. ... same question here; the architect COULD mess with things in theory, right?

3. If it's MY subconscious, and MY limbo, then I should be allowed to use a PASIV! Or hell, just make up some other machine that will do the trick. Or a time machine. Or ... just about anything, really. They were creating CITIES, ffs, I should be able to use a PASIV device. And since it's my limbo ... maybe it's up to me what happens then? Hm. So I'll just decide that you come out on the other side. Through water. *nods* Sounds good.

4. My own mind is against me in everything I do (because I DO love a good discussion) ... so it sounds weird not to be attacked by ones own subconscious. Then again, your theory does makes sense on this one. The projections would probably just shrug off any weird things with a "Oh, it's only Ihni ... we know and accept all of this". Fine.

5. Point taken. But one probably COULD make them attack to spice things up a bit, yeah?

6. Interesting theory, and I LIKE it. Because if we take things further, that could be a variation of reincarnation, right? Like ... I could be sedated and have died and gone to limbo right now! And when I die here (in this "life"), I'll be reborn to a new life (ie, wash up on the shores of limbo again ... but since it's MY libo, and MY reality, I'll just call it a new life). About the only asleep factor, yeah, that makes sense. But how could they go so deep without being sedated?

1. I actually don't know. I mean, thinking about it now, I suppose anyone could alter the dreamscape. The person who builds the world is just the one who's dream it is, so I guess anyone could do anything in a dream (that's why people can forge). And yeah, I guess anyone is a potential forger, but forging requires copying precise body movements and a LOT of imagination, I guess.

2. I got my terminology wrong. The architect is just the person who designs things. The DREAMER is the one who constructs the worlds in-dream. I think that when you go into a dream, YOU decide what you wear. I don't know if you can change things about other people...

3. Yeah, I suppose you could, since anything possible. I just don't know what would happen. I mean, I don't know if you're uncosciously creating the world in limbo, like "Hmm...I want to go home" and bingo, there's your house around the corenr, or if you actually think, "I want to build a building over there," and there is it. I mean, limbo becomes your reality. How many time machines do you have in YOUR reality right now?

4. I don't think it has much to do with your mind being against you, just the fact that your subconscious would recognize you and leave you alone. However, if you had feelings of persecution or something, your subconscious might turn on you.

5. Oh, yeah. Just dream up a dark alley where there are serial killers and rapists or something. :)

6. Yes, it'd be like that. Except, I think, that you'd wake up whatever age you are in real life, instead of as a baby.

Cobb and Mal went into a deep sleep simply by going too far down into their own subconsciouses and being caught in an unstable dream the collpsed. They could have woken up by dying any time they wanted, I think, but it became too real for them to think about leaving. It would be like planning suicide for real. Sedation is just used to stabalize the dream leveles, so you don't get caught in a collapse.

Or, maybe getting out of limbo is touch and go? I mean, Arthur and Cobb were arguing about how sometimes you never leave Limbo. I think it might have to do with believing and convincing yourself that this isn't real. Otherwise, your subconscious might just shut off becuase it thinks it killed itself, so your body wakes up a vegetable? I don't know.

Or, perhaps, it has to do with how you get there. I mean, the first time Cobb and Mal got caught in a collapse or something, and just woke up in limbo. They didn't go down into 'fourth-level' Limbo with a PASIV, like Ari and Cobb did later. I think that if you went to limbo connected to a PASIV, it's be easier to get out because you have almost no choice but to wake up when your baody is kicked. But if there's no way to kick you in limbo without a PASIV...

7. Yeah, I dunno about that. I think if they disconnected you from the PASIV, your mind would stay in limbo with anyone else who was connected with you and there, simply because you're already there together, but your body would wake up in, like, a coma state. No mind present.

Limbo is created by everyone in the dream, not just the dreamer. If you've been to limbo before, your limbo will show up when you have the misfortune of going back. If more than one person had been to limbo separate from you, your limbos might merge, or maybe they'd show up as like, neighboring cities? I dunno.

8. Yay!

---

I like talking about this, too. It's a lot of fun!

1. and 2. ... which makes me wonder, if anyone can alter the dreamscape, and what you wear ... and forgers can even alter their appearance ... then they should be able to "dream" away the injuries the projections cause them, right? Like, it should work in theory ... What's so different between a body and a building in a dream? They're both NOT REAL.

I like your arguments! Especially the part about different limbos being like neighbouring cities ... :p That thought is strangely appealing, don't you think? Like yeah, you might end up in limbo, but you're not COMPLETELY alone. You can be GOD in your own city, but if you get bored of it, just take the train (or wait, the BUS!) to your neighbour.

:D

1. I think it might have to do with the fact that, in the dream the cities are purely the dreamscape, purely not real and manipulatable, whereas your body is the physical manifestation of your mind. I think forging only works because you are altering someone ELSE's perception of you, but you know you are still yourself. It's like, wrapping the dreamscape AROUND you like a cloak instead of changing your actual self.

It's like creating pants or an outfit in the dreamscape. You imagine the clothes, and then you step into them or whatever. In the scene where Eames is practicing to be Browning, I think he is first buliding Browning's image in the mirror and then putting it on. When you see him practicing with the galss, for example, he still looks like himself, but it's Browning in the mirror.

Hee hee, take a bus to Cobb's subconscious! It'll be a fun field trip. XD

Hm, yeah okay that makes sense ... BUT then it should be possible to transform any incoming bullets into ... idk, popcorn or something? Because they're NOT a part of your body (yet).

Damn, I have so many questions concerning this movie! I wish I could just ... kidnap Nolan or something and question him until ... no, wait. That would probably only lead to more questions, and I'd never get away from there. Never mind.

And yeah, field trip. :p Hmm, now there's a nice little prompt for the meme ...

Well, Explaining that, you would have to know that the bullet is coming and think fast enough before it impacts your body. That's just impossible to transform incoming bullets.
The weapons themselves are a different story .__. I mean, if you change the weapons that the projections have in their hands into something harmless before they attack, they can't attack you; but it would be a dead giveaway to the extractor and reaaaally piss off their subconscious.

Or all of this "why cant they just change ____ " can be explained like the Matrix. They just simply don't have the mental capacity to do it. Even in the Matrix when they knew it wasn't real, Neo and the rest still had problems dodging some attacks. Because lets face it, if you SEE someone shoot you, its really hard to convince your mind that it didn't happen or it's not real. Even Arthur had a problem with just dreaming of something "bigger"

I...really don't know, actually. XD Maybe it takes to much concentration? Dunno.

You're on the meme? So am I! :D (that is, if we're talking about the one I think we are, which, I think, we ARE.)
